On a sailboat, is it faster to sail on a dead run, or on a broad reach?

I have a Cape Dory Typhoon, a day sailer that is not made for racing.

Typically the broad reach is faster.

On a dead run the action of the waves and the boat plowing will slow you down.

On a broad reach most hulls cut the water cleaner and keep; the speed up.

Handheld GPS will let you know.
